Artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced on Friday that it has appointed Irina Ghose as its managing director for India.

Ghose previously served as managing director for Microsoft's India business, a position she held for two years before departing the company in December 2025. She had spent 24 years with the U.S. technology company.

The company, which counts Alphabet's Google and Amazon among its backers, plans to open its first India office in Bengaluru in early 2026.

India represents the second-largest market for Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude. Usage in the country has been concentrated on technical applications including programming.

The country has more than a billion internet users. Enterprise and consumer adoption of artificial intelligence is increasing in India, making it a competitive market for global technology companies.
