IRS Direct File Ends as Free Tax Filing Options Remain Available

IRS Direct File has ended and won't return for 2026 tax season, but multiple free filing options continue including IRS Free File, software free versions, VITA, TCE, and MilTax.

IRS Direct File Ends as Free Tax Filing Options Remain Available

The IRS Direct File program has concluded and will not be accessible when tax filing begins in January 2026. Several alternatives for free tax filing remain in place.

IRS Free File, available through a partnership with the Free File Alliance, offers free tax preparation software for individuals with an adjusted gross income below $84,000 in 2025. This option avoids unexpected charges and supports situations like itemizing deductions or reporting business income, though it generally works best for straightforward returns. Some states allow free state tax filing through this service.

Free or trial versions of tax software from companies including H&R Block, TurboTax, TaxSlayer, and TaxAct Free are also available. These typically provide access to Form 1040 and are suitable for simple filings. Eligibility often requires a filing status of single or married filing jointly, income primarily from W-2s, unemployment, or retirement, claiming the standard deduction, and only claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides free tax preparation by IRS-certified volunteers at locations like libraries and schools for taxpayers with incomes of $67,000 or less, those with disabilities, or limited English speakers.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly, a sister program to VITA, offers free tax preparation services for older taxpayers, often through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. Services typically target individuals aged 60 or older with simple returns involving pensions or retirement concerns, though some AARP sites assist filers aged 50 and up with low to moderate incomes.

MilTax, the Department of Defense's free tax software offered with Military OneSource, is available for military members, their families, and some veterans. It addresses specific issues like combat wages and multi-state filings, has no income limits, includes a support call center, and guarantees accuracy with reimbursement up to $10,000 for errors.

For some free filing options, state tax returns may incur additional fees. The IRS previously offered free fillable forms online, but these have been archived and are not available for electronic filing this year.
